Types of MBA Programs

There are a variety of MBA program formats that physicians can pursue.  These programs tend to vary based on whether the courses are live or online.  They can also vary based on length and program flexibility.  Prices can also vary greatly depending upon the format and school reputation.   

Full-Time MBA Programs

Some physicians opt to attend a full-time program. This requires time away from practice and is often done during or right after medical school.  These programs typically take two years to complete and are not very flexible.  Depending on the school, the can be very expensive.  They often require the physician to take the GMAT.

Executive MBA Programs

These programs are usually two years in length and often must be completed in this time period.  They are often given on-campus on weekends or on Fridays and Saturdays, usually on one or two weekends a  month.  Some require the GMAT especially the top tier schools.  They also can be quite expensive as the cost covers everything from hotel accommodations to books and supplies.  ​

Online MBA Programs

These programs are flexible and often allow the physician a few years to complete the program.  The price for these programs can vary from expensive to inexpensive.  Some programs require the GMAT and some do not.  Some cam be completed entirely online while others require short residency periods on campus.  ​

Physician MBA Programs

These programs are usually a variation of the executive MBA programs.  Most of these programs will waive the GMAT.  They usually tend to be flexible and allow physicians to complete their studies from lengths range from one to 6-7 years depending upon the program.  The format often includes live on-site and online components.  The live lectures are often given on weekends and some programs also require on-site week-long residency periods.
